| In 1986, a project was started at Camp Mabry in Austin, Texas, to establish a museum and archival collection, dedicated to the men and women who served in the military forces of Texas. In 1987, a military historical holding was established, sanctioned by the United States Army Center of Military History.
In 1990, the Adjutant General designated Building 6, constructed in 1918, as the site for the museum. Volunteers were assembled and work began to establish two exhibit galleries, a workshop and a secure vault. As a result of their labor and dedication, a formal opening was held November 14, 1992.
The museum has been incorporated with a state charter and is established as a not for profit corporation with the IRS.

The Texas Military Forces Museum at Camp Mabry is one of Texas’ greatest assets. It is the only museum in the Nation devoted to the history of the military forces of the State of Texas.
The museum is a living testimonial to the legacy of the Texas military. With exhibits ranging from the Texas Revolution to Desert Storm, the museum is an important tool for informing citizens about the values and events that shape our modem world. Through the Texas Military Forces Museum, we remember those who sacrificed themselves for our freedom and make certain that their stories will not be forgotten. The museum had over 14,000 visitors in 1997, including presentations to over 1,400 school children. Visitors came from every state in the United States, schools and organizations, as well as from 28 foreign countries. Each gained a new awareness of Texas history and of the contributions made by Texans to the United States and to world history.
The museum is a one-of-a-kind repository of information on Texas military history. The museum has an extensive library and archives with over 8,000 volumes relating to Texas and world military history. The reading room is open to all visitors.
The volunteer staff at the Texas Military Forces Museum has done a remarkable job putting together excellent, educational exhibits. Attendance at the museum has steadily increased for the last several years. In calendar year 1994, about 4,000 visitors toured the museum. In calendar year 1997, that number was up to 14,029. In addition to tours, the staff travels to schools in the area, giving talks and demonstrations on Texas military history to school children and civic organizations
