Mission is to promote awareness and preservation of the German cultural heritage of Texas. Includes genealogy, publications, events, history, and library.

The German-Texan Heritage Society is a group of individuals with the common goal of furthering German-Texan culture through many activities. We work hard and have fun serving each other, interested people, and the community.

Promoting awareness and preservation of the German cultural heritage in Texas. Founded in 1978, the German-Texan Heritage Society is renowned for the books it publishes, its collection of immigrant and historical books, and the complete collection on microfiche of the German newspaper, Texas Vorwärts. The GTHS is a non-profit organization dependant on the generosity of friends and members who support its mission.

EDUCATION AND HISTORIC PRESERVATION In 1858 the German Free School Association opened the first chartered school in Austin in this building. Today, 143 years later, you can learn German here, research German-Texan history in our Pioneer Library, participate in cultural events and personally preserve this historic structure for generations to come.

GTHS activities and benefits:
Publications such as the Journal, newsletters and books detailing various aspects of German influence in Texas from the 1800s to present day.
Educational alliances with groups such as the Society for German-American Studies.
Annual meetings which change location from year to year and focus on the unique German heritage and history of areas around the state. Past annual meeting sites include San Angelo, New Braunfels, San Antonio, Austin, Houston, Round Top, Corpus Christi and Kerrville.
Genealogical assistance made available through our genealogy editor, workshops and Journal queries.
Educational seminars such as one held in Austin in 1993, which focused on "German Heritage in the Southwest."
The German-Texan Heritage Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are entirely dependent on dues, special fundraising programs and events, grants and private contributions to meet expenses.
