About the San Antonio Wheelmen
Welcome to the San Antonio Wheelmen website. We are San Antonio’s premier cycling club, founded in 1971. We have about 600 members and encourage bicycle riders of all ages, riding styles and skill levels to join us.
The primary purpose of the Club is to promote the sport of safe bicycling in the San Antonio area through the provision of cycling activities for both its members and other bicycle riders. We also promote the education of the general public as to advantages of the bicycle as a source of health and fitness and to the rights of cyclists under the current laws of the State of Texas.
As part of our mission to be a good citizen of the community, the Wheelmen supports the Texas Bicycle Coalition, the national League of American Bicyclists, the San Antonio/Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization (Bicycle Mobility Task Force) and the annual American Diabetes Association’s “Tour de Cure”.
Due-paying members receive our newsletter, the Pedaler, that includes cycling-related articles and activities in the San Antonio and South Texas area. Membership dues are $20 per year, with family memberships available for $25.
Each month, the Wheelmen routinely plans and develops a ride schedule and posts it on this web page and in our newsletter. There are at least two organized club rides each weekend, coordinated by a Ride Starter. Each ride usually offers short, medium and long mileage options. The Ride Starter typically researches the route for the day to assure its safety and provides maps for the ride, as well as a sign-in sheet with a liability waiver form. He or she is also required to review the San Antonio Wheelmen pre-ride safety briefing with the riders prior to the ride.
Most Wheelmen rides are “ride at your own pace”, which means that riders will group according to pace and distance. There are also scheduled beginners’ rides that ride at the pace of the slowest riders, accompanied by an experienced Ride Leader. Additionally, the Club schedules intermediate level rides, also accompanied by a Ride Leader, where all riders stay together in the group that rides at a moderate pace. Every four years, we sponsor the highly successful three-day, Easter Hill Country Bicycle Tour based in Kerrville. Please note that helmets are required for all Wheelmen rides.
We encourage you to come out as our guest on a few organized weekend rides prior to joining the San Antonio Wheelmen. We are living in one of the best areas in the country for year-round cycling and I hope to meet you personally on one of our rides.
Sincerely,
Cliff Hickel, President, San Antonio Wheelmen
