| A company that began by offering country-style sausage to customers on a neighbor’s “butter and egg route” celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2003.
Owens Country Sausage, based in Richardson, Texas, currently records sales in the tens of millions, with distribution of its fresh sausage, convenience sandwiches and potato products in 10 states.
The idea for the business came when C.B. (Clifford) and Kate Owens leased a 100-acre farm in Richardson, Texas, and met the McGuire family, who delivered butter and eggs to 50 customers every Saturday. C.B. wondered if the customers would like to add some sausage to their breakfast orders and joined onto the delivery route.
The farmhouse operation began – with C.B. and a few farm hands making the sausage, while Kate sewed the sausage sacks from sheets and flour sacks. Within five years, the Owens family had their first wholesale outlet customer, the 17-location Dallas Food Stores.
Today, the company employs more than 300 and Owens has become one of the nation’s leading regional sausage producers.
Current products include not only the company’s fresh sausage rolls, links and patties, but also a line of convenience foods including Snackwiches, Border Breakfasts and mashed potatoes. Owens also offers hams, chili and smoked sausage to customers.
“We still concentrate on quality, taste and integrity – the fundamentals of our company – whether that’s in our traditional sausage or our newer convenience products which complement the lifestyle of today’s busy consumer,” said Owens Country Sausage President Mike Townsley.
Owens products are sold in top retailers and through wholesalers across the southwest, including Walmart, HEB, Kroger, Albertsons, Brookshire Foods, United Supermarkets, Grocer’s Supply and Affiliated Foods.
The company’s products are currently distributed in Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Louisiana, Nevada, Oklahoma, Kansas, New Mexico, Mississippi and Texas. The company also offers private label brands and has a chain of nine Owens Restaurants.
Owens Facilities
In addition to its sausage production plant in Richardson, Owens recently purchased a new food production plant in Sulphur Springs, Texas. The new plant will allow for an expansion of the company’s production of convenience foods.
The 52,777-square-foot facility will serve as the sandwich assembly plant beginning in early 2004 for Owens Country Sausage and Bob Evans Farms’ popular line of convenience sandwiches. The plant represents a $4 million investment for the company.
Owens Country Sausage headquarters are located in Richardson, Texas, alongside Owens’ Spring Creek Farm, just minutes from C.B. Owens’ original farm.
Spring Creek Farm is home to Belgian horses, Shetland and miniature ponies and other farm animals. The company also has a museum and antique wagon showroom at the farm, which is open seven days a week and receives thousands of visitors annually.
