| We believe in old-fashioned service Texas style at Chuck's. Our customers get reliability, dependability and unsurpassed service at all levels of our organization and they have come to expect this from us. That's what allows us to keep our rates in place. To date, we have not had to drop a rate to compete with the large carriers that are having revenue issues. Fact is, the trucking industry still has the same basic rules it started with more than 80 years ago; pick up on time, deliver on time, do your paperwork correctly and always communicate effectively. We play by the rules and we maintain the type of service the trucking industry started with. This has allowed us to weather the rough times all trucking companies have experienced in the industry over the last couple of years. We know we must continue to provide great service, without question, to our customers in today's market. That's how we are able to maintain our rates when everybody else is just trying to keep revenue coming through the door. With this philosophy behind us, we have averaged an 18% growth annually.
In the late `70s I was working in the logistical portion of the industry. After 14 years of exposure to others mistakes, we were ready to try our hand in the business. In 1994 I started Chuck's Transport, Inc (now Chuck's Trucking, Ltd.) in our den. Our company started out as a 3rd party logistics firm, but soon after its inception it was obvious we could increase our presence in the trucking industry by running our own trucks as well. Chuck's Trucking, Inc. was founded in February of '95. After seven years and tremendous growth the company has evolved into a full service transportation provider and has become one of South Texas' s largest for hire refrigerated fleets. Chuck's has added B. & E. Industries, which is a 40,000 square ft. warehouse and a tractor/trailer repair shop. Our trailers are all 53' Utility Trailers equipped with Carrier Ultima 53 refrigeration units. Chuck's currently has a 70-truck-100% owner-operated fleet. Our base customers consist of meat, produce, poultry, and dairy producers, as well as assorted dry product shippers. Our traffic lanes are well established with loads from Texas to the Midwest, West Coast and Southeast. All this has come about because of the highly motivated personnel and excellent owner- operators at Chuck's.
As a third party logistic service Chuck's Transport, Inc. is able to broker loads for a wide range of customers. We have over 10,000 carriers on file to move the loads. All Carriers are screened and we check references before we allow any Carrier to haul a load. We carry a $100,000.00 Contingent Cargo Policy on each load. All Carriers are required to maintain current cargo and liability insurance on file. Our Carriers are able to haul refrigerated and dry freight. We offer cross docking and pallets if needed. Chuck's owns and operates a 40,000 sq. ft. warehouse for storage. We specialize in last minute shipments and offer an LTL service from South Texas.
The owner-operators who lease on with Chuck's Trucking, Ltd. are first rate! All applicants are carefully screened and their backgrounds are checked to insure we hire the best in the industry. We want people who are able to perform at the level our customers expect and we do all we can to see that they are able to. For example, we inspect each owner-operator' s unit for performance and safety on a monthly basis to minimize the risk of equipment breakdown. Additionally, drivers are dispatched with written instructions and temperature requirements directly from our Customers. These are just a few of the preventative steps we take to see that delivery schedules are kept.
Leasing on at Chuck's Trucking starts with a little "welcome aboard" from me before the owner-operator even hauls the first load. In keeping with the down home Texas tradition of hospitality, we know our owner-operators by their name and not their truck number. It is always good to be on a personal basis with the people you are trusting with your financial success. It only takes one person to ruin it for everybody else; unfortunately it is the bad drivers who make the rules for the good drivers. In fact, I often dispatch an owner-operator' s first load myself. This lets the owner-operator know we are in the same trench as they are, battling every day for the success of all.
The leasing program at Chuck's Trucking is based on a percentage of the total revenue generated by the load. It is our philosophy that our owner-operators can make more money on a percentage lease than on a mileage-based lease. When an owner-operator makes a better living, he will strive toward success. We believe in partnerships; the owner-operator is depending on us to make them a good living and we are depending on them to do a good job in return.
Many of our customers require their haulers to have tracking capabilities. It gives them precise information on where their loads are at any given time. Chucks Trucking has embraced technology as it has become available. All our trucks are equipped with the latest in tracking innovations. Owner-operators can email family from the cab of the truck as well as communicate with our terminal. This keeps us informed of any problems or delays and allows the driver to receive load updates easily.
The office staff here at Chuck's has over 150 years of combined experience in refrigerated transportation and dry freight markets. It is a true compliment to all this talent when one has great owner-operators and great dispatchers working in concert with one another. At Chuck's you'll find a true family atmosphere; the people here are always ready to help each other succeed in this ever-competitive industry. We' re staffed 24 hours a day seven days a week to assist not only drivers, but customers as well. I always tell my dispatchers, "When the trucks stop; we stop." Its not hard to understand where I get my motivation. I don' t sit in a quiet office somewhere out of touch. My desk is in the middle of the hectic, noisy dispatch and sales room. Anyone who wants to see us can do so with the same ease as ordering lunch. I remain steadfast in my belief in accessibility. This is a people business and people don' t care for people they don' t know. After a brief visit to Chuck's, it'll be easy to see the reason for our success. The phones never stop ringing. With the foundation in place for continued growth, we will be successful.
