| The John P. McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science is Houston's only interactive science center and a member institution of the world-renowned Texas Medical Center. Located in the heart of the city's rich and varied Museum District at 1515 Hermann Drive, the museum offers an exciting "inner body experience."
Interactivity begins in the Jim Hickox Amazing Body Pavilion. Designed as a voyage through a Texas-sized human body, the Pavilion includes giant models of human organs and dozens of hands-on exhibits and science stations. Visitors of all ages may explore how each system of the body works and how to stay healthy.
The museum also offers video and live theater productions, hands-on science classes and demonstrations, traveling exhibitions, summer camps, and other programs for schools, groups, families, and adults. Visitors enjoy shopping for unique gifts at the museum's Amazing Body Store. The George and Barbara Bush Grand Hall, DeBakey Learning Centers and McGovern Theater are available for after hours rentals for special events and parties.
Though MHMS can trace its history to 1962, it opened in the John P. McGovern Building in 1996. The museum added bilingual programming in 1998 to better serve its Spanish-speaking guests. Each Thursday from 2-5 p.m. MHMS opens its doors to all with no admission fee - Free Family Thursdays.
Fewer than ten institutions in America are focused on quality health education for the general public and school groups. MHMS currently serves more than 180,000 visitors annually, including over 40,000 school children in organized field trips. Since opening, the Museum has seen more than 1.5 million vistors and counting. This popularity ranks MHMS as the most visited health museum in the country and one of the top public attractions in the Houston area.
The museum receives generous and enthusiastic support from community members, corporations, physicians, and regional and national philanthropic organizations. The McGovern Museum of Health & Medical Science maintains affiliations with the American Association of Museums, American Public Health Association, Association of Science-Technology Centers, Museum Store Association, South Main Center Association, Texas Association of Museums, Texas Medical Center, and the Houston Museum District Association.
