| Chad Raney hit upon the idea that would change his life while staving off boredom during a five-month stint in bed, recovering from a crippling auto accident that shattered both of his legs. He opted for the Internet over daytime television, and spent much of his time in search of sites devoted to the Texas music he'd grown up on through years of watching Austin City Limits. When he came up empty handed, Raney's initial frustration quickly turned to excitement.
"I just saw a huge opportunity," says Raney, a veteran self-starter who had recently received the 1997 Texas Entrepreneur of the Year award from then Governor George W. Bush for his thriving medical equipment company, CareChoice. "I wanted to create a place where if you're a fan of Texas music, you can go and listen to listen to new music, find out about new artists and then tell other people what you think." Raney registered the domain name www.LoneStarMusic.com while still laid up in bed, and began to plot his jump into the world of e-business.
Two years later, LoneStarMusic.com has grown from Raney's flash of inspiration into the unofficial capital of Texas music on the World Wide Web. The online store, featuring more than 750 artists and some 5,000 song samples, now takes hundreds of orders a week. True to Raney's vision, visitors can also swap reviews, read exclusive interviews with artists like Radney Foster and Guy Clark, and more.
With more than two million page views in the past year alone -- and more than 18,000 subscribers to site's monthly newsletter -- the same word-of-mouth phenomenon has clearly helped make LoneStarMusic.com the success it is today. As Raney sees it, however, the site has yet to hit full stride. "We've just laid the foundation," he says. "Texas music is known around the world, and even with all we're doing now, we've only scratched the surface."
