| Tofga is a publicly supported, non-profit Association whose members include commercial plant growers, ranchers, farmers, retailers, wholesalers, processors, distributors, consumers, and anyone desiring to support the organic industry in Texas. Our primary mission is to promote organic agriculture as a sustainable systems approach in the production of food and fiber; a system that protects human and animal health, and preserves the environment.
Plants and animals reflect the soil and environment in which they grow, live, and develop. Farmers using sustainable methods replenish nutrients lost from the soil with natural amendments that provide the necessary elements needed for healthy topsoil development and management. Sustainable ranchers encourage the growth of natural forage by careful attention to grazing time, seasonal rangeland stress, observation of natural controls of predators, and elimination of alien plant material that competes with native flora.
Consumers support organic producers because they take personal responsibility for their own health, and for the future of this planet. Tofga believes everyone has a right to fresh, nutritious food produced without chemical pesticides, herbicides, (and many other -cides), urea-based fertilizers, hormones, antibiotics or genetically modified seed. Toga is devoted to making this right a reality. With the assistance of many committed member-volunteers, this association spreads the word about sustainable agriculture through speeches, workshops, literature, conferences and one-on-one mentoring and guidance.
Tax deductible donations and membership dues help support the many Tofga programs and services offered. New Tofga programs we're currently developing are:
A volunteer speakers corps ready to educate schools, clubs, associations and other groups about sustainable, organic agriculture, horticulture and home gardening.
Guidelines for setting up farmer's markets, co-ops, community supported agriculture (CSA's), and special interest groups (SIG's) to increase availability of locally produced organic food and fiber.
Volunteer mentors available to assist new organic producers.
Consumer guidelines on beneficial insects, lawn care, creating healthy soil, mulching, grasshopper control, creating organic potting soil, heirloom plants, seed saving, etc., etc.
Tofga is changing to meet the new challenges of the 21st century. With environmental concerns becoming mainstream news, it is time to bring agriculture out of the laboratories and back to the earth, where it belongs. We are committed to supporting a system that heals, nourishes and replenishes the land, which in turn will feed, nourish, and heal the people who live here. Join our team, and help us bring sensible, sustainable, organic agriculture into the new millennium.
