Texas is located in West South Central United States. It borders Mexico on the southwest and the Gulf of Mexico on the southeast. To the west is New Mexico, to the north and northeast lie Oklahoma and Arkansas, and Louisiana bounds Texas on the east. Texas is second only to Alaska in land area, it leads all other states in such categories as oil, cattle, sheep, and cotton.
Texas ranches and farms also produce poultry and eggs, dairy products, greenhouse and nursery products, wheat, hay, rice, sugar cane, and peanuts, and a variety of fruits and vegetables. Chemicals, oil refining, food processing, machinery, and transportation equipment are among the major Texas manufacturing industries. Tourism also plays a major role in the economy. A 2002 real estate survey has estimated the population of Texas at 21,779,000.
